Easy Ways to be an Eco-friendly Parent

Here at Custard and Mustard Craft we're passionate about our approaches to ethical sourcing and strive to make products that not only are safe to use for babies/toddlers, but that follow fair and caring social and environmental policies. We believe that every family has a responsibility to protect the world into which our children are growing, and we hope you agree. Being a green parent really isn't as hard as you might think. In fact, there are many ways that you can actively be more eco-friendly- here are just three of them and it does not relate to only baby furniture.

Know the Brand/Read the Label

This is probably one of the easiest changes that you can make! Your family is precious, so why wouldn't you want to protect them? What you buy for your Baby's use is so important. Just as you'd think twice about feeding your little ones lots of preservatives and chemical flavourings, you should also think twice about the products you use for your little ones. Clothes, creams and lotions all come with labels that you need to read, just as baby furniture should be made by a brand you trust.

When it comes to food, the more natural the ingredients and the shorter the ingredients list the better. Avoid heavily processed foods and preservatives. As for clothes, do your research. Does the company you're buying from have readily available information on how they source their materials? Are they using materials from sustainable crops, responsibly sourced? If you're not sure, then do some digging. Most ethically minded brands will make such information easily available so that you can make the right decisions for your family.

Hand-me-downs/Re-use!

In an increasingly 'disposable world, it's heart warming to know that more and more families are starting to recognise the importance of recycling and re-using as much as possible as well as the process of hand-me-downs.

Re-using clothes is such an easy thing to do, and choosing garments that you know are going to last can also help to prolong the life of your wardrobe. The hand-me-down process can apply to our durable convertible baby cribs that are not only made from responsibly sourced fine wood (which is also super sustainable and super kind to babies!) This means that they will last longer and when your baby outgrows the crib, your new baby can use it, thus reducing the need to buy another.

Incidentally, the fact that we make them with the finest wood in the market also means they are more durable than any other baby furniture around, and last longer too - a great example of why knowing the brand is so important! When you're ready to hand your Custard and Mustard Craft furniture to another family, you can be rest assured it's going to serve them well too.

Make small changes you can build on

We all start somewhere, and often the smallest steps take us on the biggest adventures. If you want to make positive changes towards a greener lifestyle, start small. Opt for home-made baby food and fill your own pouches instead of buying more expensive plastic packages. Switch to BPA free bottles. Reduce your use of plastic packaging overall. Arm yourself with the knowledge of the simple things you can do in order to contribute towards bigger environmental impacts.

Lovely to be blogging again...this topic is broad so please lets expand on it in the comment section!!

In our usual fashion, please feel free to leave comments so we can also be aware of your thoughts. Also, we will appreciate suggestions on topics you wish us to research and give you our 10pence lol.

choosing nursery furniture

Having a baby is such an exciting time, but it is a long 9 months waiting for your little bundle of joy to arrive.  In that time however there is lots to prepare - baby names, baby groups, work and most importantly the nursery !  Looking for your dream nursery suddenly makes everything seem a lot more real.  I waited until the last possible minute before buying cot beds and changer for my twin girls (I wish I'd launched this blog/website before!), because there are lots of choices out there so a bit of preparation will hopefully make the decisions a bit easier! Firstly, there is the decision as to whether or not to buy a moses basket.  I did not buy one firstly because I felt a cot bed and a moses basket in the same space was going to cloak the nursery and would not have fitted well and I felt that my new born babies would outgrow it fast! Don't get me wrong, a moses basket is great as it is portable and can be used in your own bedroom during the night, and then dow

Practical ideas on how to make the most of a small nursery

When your nursery has limited space, keep in mind that less is more. Trying to cram in too much furniture can make the room impractical and create a claustrophobic environment. Here are some practical ideas for a small nursery. Think tall, not wide Make use of the height of the room, using tall rather than wide furniture. Slim, tall, one-door wardrobes are available, and some have shelves all the way up. For safety, secure tall furniture to the wall with a bracket or two. Since baby clothes are small, you can install another one or two hanging rails further down in the wardrobe. You can then hang up more clothes. Put shoe racks, storage boxes or a set of drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe to take advantage of the space. If you have space above the wardrobe, tall plastic drawers or baskets can be placed on top. Multifunctional furniture Multifunctional furniture can save space and money. Try changing units with drawers or shelves underneath or those with longer legs that

Quality Mattress equals happy baby

Finding the best mattress for your baby can be hard work. In fact, there are so many styles, makes and models of mattresses but one of the easiest ways to begin is to decide what size of mattress you should get for your baby and the type. It has been reported that latex mattresses tend to be springier and durable for a baby bed. I was recently asked what kind of mattress is available at custardandmustardcraft and I immediately said "the mattress best for your baby", generally assuming that the client is aware of the different types of baby mattresses. That should not have been my answer, hence the need to blog about it and provide more insight to the kind of mattress best for your baby.   It is common for parents to pay more attention to a child’s bed frame, comforters, and bed sheets than to the mattress. This is unfortunate because there is probably no item in a child’s bedroom that is more important to a baby's health than the mattress. Children sleep longer and d
